You are invited to share your views about the draft Oxfordshire Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA).
What is a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA)?
Oxfordshire Health and Wellbeing Board must produce an assessment of pharmaceutical services in its area every three years. This is required by law under the NHS regulations.
The next assessment will be published by the end of the September 2025. This document is called the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA).
The PNA is a report that looks at the current needs for pharmacy services. It helps to find any gaps in services or areas that can be improved. There must be a consultation period of at least 60 days as part of this process
Pharmaceutical services are one of the many services currently provided under the NHS by community pharmacies and include:
dispensing of medicines and appliances on prescription
sale of medicines to the public
providing advice to the public on medicines, coping with ill health or general
health and wellbeing
receiving waste medicines for safe destruction
Who will use the Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment?
The PNA will be used by NHS England, Oxfordshire County Council, and the Integrated Care Boards to make decisions about new pharmacy applications and other services that can be provided by community pharmacies.
Who are we consulting with and why?
We are consulting with any patient, consumer or community group in the county who has an interest in the provision of pharmaceutical services as well as our statutory stakeholders. Your comments will inform the final Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment which will be published in September 2025.
When will the consultation take place?
The consultation will take place from 2 June until 3 August 2025.
