We will be installing 1,500 public electric vehicle (EV) charging bays across Oxfordshire between now and mid-2028 to help residents make the transition to driving electric vehicles. We will prioritise supporting the estimated 30% of residents who don't have a driveway and can't easily install a home EV charger.
These public chargers will largely be 'lower power' 7kW AC chargers aimed at being used overnight and when cars are parked for a long period. The locations of these new chargers will include a mix of:
- EV charging hubs in public car parks - usually 4 or more chargers grouped together, including some 'higher power' rapid DC chargers in key places
- Smaller community EV charging 'microhubs' - where town and parish councils host 2-4 charging bays at community buildings such as village halls and community centres
- On-street/kerbside charging on residential streets where no other suitable off-street hub options are available - typically grouped into sets of 4 bays
We also would like to increase the provision of car clubs (i.e. shared vehicles - ideally EV - that people can hire on an hourly or daily basis) in suitable locations across the county offering an alternative to traditional car ownership.
Please use this interactive map to tell us where you would like to see public EV chargers and car clubs around Oxfordshire
Note that this is solely to assess the level of demand for EV chargers and car clubs in different parts of Oxfordshire. It will be used to inform decision making and enable us to install EV charging and introduce car clubs where they will offer most benefit to residents. However, ultimately decisions about where EV chargers will go are dependent on strategic priorities, cost of installation and other practical factors such as the availability of a suitable electrical connection. Where EV chargers are installed on the Highway, there will be an element of statutory consultation involved in amendment of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs).
Another possible solution for residents wanting to charge their EVs at kerbside using their own home EV charger is the EV charging cable channel. There are only available upon application to Oxfordshire County Council. For more information and to apply visit our EV cable channel webpage.
