Food waste survey introduction

Our project team have been calling on households in Oxfordshire to complete a survey about food waste recycling. Where our team couldn’t speak to anyone when they called, we have produced this quick survey for those households to complete online.

The aim of this project is to:

  1. encourage households to recycle their food waste.
  2. make sure households know every type of food waste that can be recycled.

The online survey is open until 31 December 2026 and only needs to be completed once.

Why should I recycle my food waste?

Although Oxfordshire residents already recycle over 25,000 tonnes of food waste annually, around half of the food waste that Oxfordshire households produce does not make it into food caddies for recycling. It is instead going into general rubbish bins which are meant for non-recyclable waste.

Recycling food waste reduces the environmental impact of waste disposal and costs much less than disposing of mixed rubbish. If everyone in Oxfordshire recycled all their food waste, Oxfordshire County Council would save over £2 million in waste disposal costs each year.

How is food waste recycled?

The food waste collected from your household is taken to one of two anaerobic digestion plants - one in Cassington, the other in Crowmarsh Gifford. These two sites generate enough electricity to power around 9,000 homes and make a rich liquid fertiliser which is used by Oxfordshire farmers to grow more food without needing to use chemical fertilisers.
