Consultation has concluded

Welcome to the public consultation for the Cherwell Street Bus Service Improvement Scheme. The consultation will run from Monday 4th March 2024 to Monday 1st April 2024.

Area covered by the proposed scheme

The study area includes the Cherwell Street corridor between the George Street and Bridge Street junctions, and the Bridge Street and George Street junctions themselves.

About the proposed scheme

The proposed scheme is largely funded by the Department for Transport's BSIP (Bus Service Improvement Plans) programme. Improvements to bus service reliability and journey times are therefore core aims of the scheme. Additional funding is provided by contributions secured from new development in the Banbury area.

The proposed Cherwell Street scheme includes bus priority measures as well as improved crossing facilities, optimisation of traffic signal times, changes to traffic lane allocation and lining/signing improvements. These improvements will also bring safety benefits for people walking, cycling and wheeling between the town centre bus stops and the train station, whilst minimising impacts on general traffic.

The proposed scheme lies within the highway boundary and to meet BSIP funding requirements, must be delivered by summer 2025.

Where are we now - and what happens next?

The proposed scheme is an initial part of the longer term place-making and public realm improvements in Banbury. The Cherwell Street scheme aims to deliver improvements in the shorter term (2025) and is complementary to the Tramway Road scheme that will provide better access to Banbury Station.

This consultation represents early engagement for the proposed Cherwell Street scheme. Feedback will be analysed and used to inform the next stage of scheme design and costings. There will then be a further consultation in summer 2024.
