Brightwell cum Sotwell - proposed 20mph & 40mph speed limits

Oxfordshire County Council wants to make our built environments safer and more attractive places to walk and cycle. To enable this, 20mph speed restrictions are being used to help promote alternative modes of transport for local travel. We're therefore asking for your views on the proposal to expand the existing 20mph speed limit within Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, replacing the 30mph speed limit on High Road in the process. The proposals are being put forward following road safety concerns raised by the town.

Additionally, a stretch of 20mph speed limit will be introduced on Shillingford Road adjacent to the ‘home park’, and new 40mph speed limits are also proposed within the area in order to help improve road safety, encourage active travel, and help support the 20mph proposals. Firstly on Shillingford Road between the proposed 20mph speed limit and the existing 30mph speed limit at Wallingford, and secondly the existing 40mph speed limit on the A4130 Hadden Hill/ Didcot to Wallingford road will also be extended between its current terminal point at North Moreton & the existing 30mph speed limit at Brightwell-cum-Sotwell.

What happens next?

The county council will review the responses and if necessary (i.e. if objections are received) prepare a report to be presented to the Cabinet Member for Highway Management at a meeting scheduled for later in 2023/early in 2024. This will be public meeting at which members of the public may apply to speak. The agenda and reports for meetings will be made available on the Oxfordshire County Council web site about a week before the meeting (please note that occasionally it is necessary to defer reports to a later meeting, and it is therefore advisable to check the agenda ahead of attending a meeting).
