We are writing to residents to gather feedback on potential amendments to on-street parking restrictions within Wallingford town centre.

After Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) took over enforcement from the police in 2021, there were requests for changes to be made and - in summer 2023 - a resident’s parking scheme was introduced in Castle Street and Reading Road, and minor changes also made to yellow lines in Croft Road and St Johns Road.

Further requests for residents parking schemes and other changes have now been received, and OCC has been working with the local community through a consultative forum to review these requests, taking into account all the different demands for parking in the town centre, strategies to encourage alternative / more sustainable transport options, and of course issues relating to traffic and road safety generally.

It has now been agreed that the best way forward is to consult with residents at this preliminary stage, before any decision is made to advertise any formal changes to on-street parking restrictions. This provides an opportunity to discuss parking within the context of wider local transport issues with the whole town centre community.

Alongside the main focus upon on-street parking (which the County Council is responsible for), Officers are working with colleagues from South Oxfordshire District Council to discuss whether any options are available to look at changes to off-street car parks. Albeit, this joint working has some limitations, as it is recognised that Council responsibilities (and powers to act) will change from April 2028 when the new Ridgeway Unitary Authority comes into being.

As your views and opinions matter, your response should be completed and returned by 5pm on Friday 02nd October 2026.

What happens next?

In discussion with the local County Councillor & consultative forum, it is anticipated that the feedback from the consultation will be reviewed after it closes, and if there is a consensus for parking measures to be taken forward, these will be subject to further 'formal' consultation with residents later in this financial year.
