Consultation has concluded

An online survey was hosted on Let’s Talk Oxfordshire between 7 May 2024 and 2 June 2024, to gather feedback from:

  • Parents and carers
  • Children and young people
  • Schools and school staff
  • Members of the public

The Sustainable School Travel Strategy sets out Oxfordshire County Council’s approach for promoting sustainable travel to and from school and college across Oxfordshire. It supports our vision:

To improve the health and wellbeing of our children and young people by enabling active and sustainable travel to school and college on a safe, eco-friendly Oxfordshire transport system.

The survey aimed to understand what would encourage people to choose sustainable travel and how we can provide support to make this happen. The information and feedback provided will support the creation of an Oxfordshire County Council led action plan for supporting sustainable travel to school and college.

537 people responded, of which 78.5 per cent were involved in school or college journeys. Over 50 per cent of respondents were parents/carers of primary school pupils.

A young person’s focus group exercise (Travel & Transport Sounding Board) held in March 2023 identified a number of barriers to sustainable travel choices for the school/college journey. These reflected with some of those challenges identified through the public engagement exercise.

You said:

  • Cycling is the most popular preferred mode of travel at 33.8 per cent, but only 18 per cent of journeys are currently made using this mode
  • All the actions were supported, but improving cycling routes to schools and colleges had the highest level of support.
  • Better quality footways were indicated by respondents as the most important measure to enable active travel modes on their school journeys. But again, all measures were highly supported.
  • More regular and well-timed buses, cheaper bus/rail travel and more cycle training for all primary pupils and parents were all highly supported measures to enable sustainable travel options on school journeys

We did:

  • Feedback has been used to inform an action plan that supports sustainable school travel choices
  • Twenty-four actions related to county council work on sustainable school travel have been identified. These include work that is already underway, existing work that can be expanded, and new work identified through public engagement.
  • Actions related to existing work will be delivered through existing funding.
  • Some new work can be delivered partially by focusing current staffing resources on the key priorities identified through public feedback.
  • Other new work is aspirational, and we hope it will attract external funding grants that will support the Council to deliver it as co-production projects.

Next steps

  • The Draft Sustainable School Travel Strategy and public engagement report will be presented to Cabinet on the 17 September 2024.
  • If approved by the Cabinet, the strategy document will be published on the Council's website by 19 September 2024.
