Staying warm, safe, healthy and independent at home is important to us all. Knowing where to go for advice and support to achieve these goals is sometimes complicated.

Councils in Oxfordshire currently fund a service called Better Housing Better Health.

It provides free, local, independent tailored advice and support over the phone to help residents (and those working with them) to find the service or support that can help sort out cold, unsafe/unhealthy homes.

Better Housing Better Health mostly provides advice about energy efficiency and can link people up with available grants to improve their home for warmth and safety.

We ran a survey between 27 Feb and 14 April to gather views to help us design and deliver a service for Oxfordshire residents to help them stay warm, safe and healthy at home.

The survey was to help us understand more about where the service is needed. If people were responding as a resident, we also asked about their experiences of keeping their home warm and energy efficient and finding out more about getting their home repaired or maintained. We also wanted to know what to include in this service and how to make sure people know about it.

The results of the survey can be found in our report in the documents section.

It has recently added home visits for more vulnerable residents to help them work out what the issues are and suggest practical ways of helping. You can watch a 1 minute explainer video here.

Good housing is a key building block for good health, but some times a home can cause harm to health or not provide the level of comfort or safety we want for our residents.  We’d like to know what support residents might need to help them get their homes back to supporting their health and wellbeing, including being energy efficient.  We are focussing on what sort of help people need with keeping their home warm and energy efficient, but also including what sort of advice and support people might need with to help repair and maintain their home.

There is support out there to help residents, however we know it can be a bit complicated to work out who can help with what. It depends on where you live, the nature of the problem, whether you rent or own your home, when you happen to ask for help and who is asking for that help.

We would like your views to help us design and deliver a service for Oxfordshire residents to help them stay warm, safe and healthy at home.
