Stanton Harcourt & Sutton: B4449 Eynsham Road & Main Road - proposed speed limits & traffic calming

We're asking for your views on the proposal to introduce new & amend existing speed limits in Stanton Harcourt & Sutton, which are being put forward to help improve road safety on local roads:

1. 30mph speed limit – extend the existing limit on the B4449 Eynsham Road at the southern end of Sutton,
2. 40mph speed limits:
   1. Burford Road – a new limit, extending northwards from the existing 20mph speed limit at Sutton for approx.400 metres,
   2. on Main Road – a new limit extending southwards from the existing 20mph speed limit at Stanton Harcourt for approx.400 metres.

Additionally, Traffic calming features will also be introduced to further help reduce the speed of vehicles entering & travelling through the residential/built-up areas:

• B4449 Eynsham Road (at Sutton):
  • Gated chicane features (with priority given to traffic leaving the village) to be located at the existing 20mph speed limit terminal point north of its junction with Sutton Lane, and at the existing 20mph/30mph speed limit terminal point south of its junction with Beaumont Green.
  • Road narrowing (with kerbed build-outs in each carriageway), to be located north of its junction with Sutton Lane, with priority given to traffic travelling northwards.
• Main Road (at Stanton Harcourt) – a Gated chicane feature (with priority given to traffic leaving the village), to be located at the existing 20mph speed limit terminal point south of its junction with Halifax Way.

What happens next?

The County Council will review the responses and if necessary (i.e. if objections are received) prepare a report to be presented to the Cabinet Member for Highway Management at a meeting scheduled for later in 2026. This will be public meeting at which members of the public may apply to speak. The agenda and reports for meetings will be made available on the Oxfordshire County Council web site about a week before the meeting (please note that occasionally it is necessary to defer reports to a later meeting, and it is therefore advisable to check the agenda ahead of attending a meeting).
