Standlake & Brighthampton: A415 Abingdon Road & B4449 Aston Road - proposed speed limits & traffic calming

We're asking for your views on the proposal to introduce new & amend existing speed limits in Standlake & Brighthampton, which are being put forward to help improve road safety on local roads:

1. 20mph speed limit–
   1. A415 Abingdon Road – replacing the existing 30mph speed limit between its junctions with High Street & Aston Road in its entirety,
   2. Heyford Close – for its entire length.
2. 40mph speed limits:
   1. B4449 Aston Road – a new limit extending south-westwards towards Aston, from the existing 20mph speed limit at Brighthampton for approx.400 metres,
   2. Downs Road – a new limit extending eastwards towards Standlake, from the existing 60mph speed limit at its junction with the A415 Witney Road through to the existing 30mph speed limit.

Additionally, Traffic calming features will also be introduced to further help reduce the speed of vehicles entering & travelling through the residential/built-up areas:

• A415 Abingdon Road – Road narrowing with kerbed build-outs, to be located east of its junction with the B4449 Aston Road (Brighthampton Corner), and immediately south of its junction with High Street/Shifford Lane.
• A415 Witney Road – a Road narrowing with kerbed build-out in the eastern carriageway, to be located at the existing 50mph speed limit terminal point.
• B4449 Aston Road:
  • Road narrowing with ‘Gateway’ features in each carriageway, to be located at the existing 20mph speed limit terminal point, southwest of its junction with Malthouse Lane.
  • Road narrowing with kerbed build-outs, to be located south of its junction with the A415 Abingdon/Witney Road.

What happens next?

The County Council will review the responses and if necessary (i.e. if objections are received) prepare a report to be presented to the Cabinet Member for Highway Management at a meeting scheduled for later in 2026. This will be public meeting at which members of the public may apply to speak. The agenda and reports for meetings will be made available on the Oxfordshire County Council web site about a week before the meeting (please note that occasionally it is necessary to defer reports to a later meeting, and it is therefore advisable to check the agenda ahead of attending a meeting).
