During the summer of 2024, the Oxfordshire SEND local area partnership (LAP) asked for your views and experiences of education, health and care services and provision for all children and young people with SEND in Oxfordshire.
The survey asked about experiences of:
identifying and assessing SEND
meeting SEND needs
reviewing SEND needs and preparing for next steps
accessing SEND-related information, advice and signposting
and overall views of SEND services.
We received 425 responses to the survey, helping the LAP (which includes Oxfordshire County Council, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and West Berkshire Integrated Care Board and Oxfordshire Parent Carers Forum) to improve SEND experiences for everyone in Oxfordshire.
You said
Communication and engagement from service providers needs to be better. You emphasised how timely and clear information helps you to navigate the services available.
There are concerns about the availability and accessibility of support services. Many of you felt that the current support systems need significant improvements.
You want more educational and training opportunities to better support your children. You would like workshops, seminars and other resources to help you understand and manage your children's needs.
You highlighted the need for effective feedback mechanisms to make sure your voices are heard and your concerns are addressed. You suggested regular surveys and forums as ways to gather and act on your feedback.
We did
This survey was conducted at the early stages of the LAP's SEND improvement journey. Since then, we have been working hard on capturing the voices of children, young people and parent carers to address the issues you raised in the survey so that your overall experience improves.
We are mindful that because the survey was an open one, we have not gained the views from a representative spread of parents and carers of children and young people with a wide range of SEND. We are now looking at new and targeted ways of capturing feedback and measuring improvement at specific service touchpoints with a much wider group of parents and carers of children and young people with a variety of needs.
