Quickway cycle routes - Oxford

Consultation has concluded

We are proposing to introduce quickway cycle routes to some of the main roads in Oxford. Quickways mean wider cycle lanes, segregation where possible, advanced stop lines, improved crossings, and 20mph speed limits where required. They're designed to get cyclists around the city quickly and safely and increase the number of people choosing to cycle.

They are a key part of the wider Active Travel programme, to establish a dual choice cycle network for direct cycling (as set out in Policy OC10 in the Oxfordshire Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan) and also support the Connecting Oxford plan. The quickway project is funded by the Department for Transport (Active Travel Fund Tranche 2).


Where are the proposed quickway cycle routes?

  • Cowley Road / Oxford Road
  • Iffley Road / Henley Avenue / Rose Hill
  • St Clement's Street
  • Donnington Bridge Road
  • Marston Road
  • Morrell Avenue / Warneford Lane
  • Between Towns Road / Church Cowley Road
  • Banbury Road / St Giles
  • Parks Road (quietways)


Parks Road is proposed as a quietway that provides a link into the Banbury Road/St Giles quickway. Quietways are well-connected cycle routes, with similar principles as quickways but following routes with lower traffic activity and are less direct.


Why are we doing this?

We want to improve safety and wellbeing in Oxford’s neighbourhoods. Our historic streets mean we often cannot completely separate cyclists from the traffic. By improving options for greener travel around the city, including cycling, through our Active Travel projects we aim to make positive steps in improving air quality in our streets, and promote more options for wellbeing that are accessible, and open for all, helping us to get more from our environment.


Consultation timescale:

The Oxford quickway cycle route consultation has been extended by three weeks and will now remain open until midnight on 31 October 2021.


The online survey includes numerous plans for residents and businesses to view.


For those with difficulty accessing content online, paper copies of the plans will be available at Oxford, Cowley, Headington or via Old Marston libraries – where you will also be able to book a computer space and get help to complete the questionnaire if you need.


A series of online drop-in sessions will also be held between 4 October and 7 October. You will need to register for these in advance. To register for one of these sessions please email quickways@oxfordshire.gov.uk specifying which session/s you are able to attend and we will send you a meeting invite.

  3. Wednesday 6 October 13.00 - 15.00
  4. Thursday 7 October 18.00 - 19.30


The consultation closes on 31 October. The next steps include:

  • Nov/Dec 2021 Traffic Regulation Order statutory consultation
  • Jan/Feb 2022 Cabinet member decision
  • Spring/summer 2022 On-street implementation


Whose views are we looking for?

We’re seeking feedback from residents, businesses, students, councillors, and stakeholders such as schools, health organisations, community groups, places of worship, and providers of key services. If you live or work in, or regularly travel through one of the proposed locations for a quickway, this is your opportunity to contribute to how the project could be shaped to work best for all our community.
