North Leigh - proposed 20mph & 40mph speed limits

Oxfordshire County Council wants to make our built environments safer and more attractive places to walk and cycle. To enable this, 20mph speed restrictions are being used to help promote alternative modes of transport for local travel. Further details on how the council is considering making 20mph the new 30mph for Oxfordshire communities can be found here.

We're therefore asking for your views on the proposal to introduce a 20mph speed limit within North Leigh & New Yatt, replacing the majority of the existing 30mph speed limit in the process. A length of 30mph speed limit will also be retained as a ‘buffer’ limit on New Yatt Road between the two proposed 20mph speed limits, with Officers having taken the current road environment & traffic usage into account. The proposals are being put forward following road safety concerns raised by the parish.

Additionally, a 40mph speed limit is proposed on the A4095 Witney Road in place of parts of the existing 50mph speed limit, which will form a continuous limit between North Leigh and Freeland/Long Hanborough. This follows concerns having been raised about the speed of traffic & associated road safety implications during previous consultations regarding speed limits on the A4095 at North Leigh.

What happens next?

The county council will review the responses and if necessary (i.e. if objections are received) prepare a report to be presented to the Cabinet Member for Highway Management at a meeting scheduled for later in 2024. This will be public meeting at which members of the public may apply to speak. The agenda and reports for meetings will be made available on the Oxfordshire County Council web site about a week before the meeting (please note that occasionally it is necessary to defer reports to a later meeting, and it is therefore advisable to check the agenda ahead of attending a meeting).
