Feedback opportunity has concluded

We are working to lower the risk of long-term health issues and helping people live healthier lives. Excess weight is a major contributor to ill-health, and research shows that food from out-of-home food businesses tends to be high in calories – often more than the 600 calories per meal recommended by Public Health England.

From September to November 2024 we asked you to share your views and experiences to help us understand how people in Oxfordshire use takeaways, cafes, restaurants and convenience stores.

268 people responded, and we will use what you told us to develop a voluntary scheme to encourage out-of-home food businesses to offer healthier, affordable options that people can access easily.

You said

  • You want businesses to be more transparent about how healthy their products are, with clearer labelling
  • Businesses should reduce the amount of unhealthy ingredients in their products and use lower-calorie alternatives
  • Changes in cooking methods could improve the healthiness of out-of-home foods
  • There should be more healthy options available, including plant-based meals and smaller portion sizes
  • You want businesses to use local and ethically sourced ingredients
  • Healthier food needs to be made more affordable, so that it is an accessible option for people

We did

We are introducing a scheme that encourages out-of-home food businesses (e.g. takeaways, cafes and restaurants) to make healthy changes to the food they provide, the cooking methods they use, and their retail environment.

We are using your feedback to:

  • identify which businesses to prioritise as part of our pilot scheme
  • inform the detail of the project, such as the targets we will ask businesses to meet
  • plan our marketing and awareness campaign, so that you can know how businesses are providing healthier foods

Next steps

We are putting the final touches to the pilot project, and will be starting working with businesses in early 2025.
