This consultation has now concluded.

Oxfordshire County Council wants to make our built environments safer and more attractive places to walk and cycle. To enable this, 20mph speed restrictions are being used to help promote alternative modes of transport for local travel. Further details on how the council is considering making 20mph the new 30mph for Oxfordshire communities can be found here.

We're therefore asking for your views on the proposal to introduce a 20mph speed limit throughout Abingdon, replacing the majority* of the existing 30mph speed limits within the main residential roads i.e. those bounded by the ‘ring road’, and those south of the river Ock in their entirety. The proposals are being put forward following road safety concerns raised by the parish council and seek an improvement of road safety for all users, and a reduction of the Counties carbon footprint, which form part of a countywide programme of works that seeks to deliver ‘a safer place with a safer pace’.

Additionally, the existing 40mph speed limits on the ‘ring road’ will be reduced to 30mph, comprising of: Audlett Drive, Twelve Acre Drive, Dunmore Road, Copenhagen Drive, and Colwell Drive.

* Note: Sections of existing 30mph speed limit on the A415 Marcham Road, Colwell Drive, Nuffield Way, A4183 Oxford Road, Radley Road & B4017 Wootton Road will be retained, along with the existing 40mph speed limit on the B4017 Drayton Road (in the parishes of Abingdon and Drayton). All of which having taken the current road environment & traffic usage into account by Officers.

Please read the detailed information provided on this consultation, and take the time to complete the survey as your views and opinions matter. Your response should be completed and returned by Friday 30 September 2022.

Whilst we will endeavour to answer simple queries during the course of the consultation, any more complex questions/issues will be appraised and dealt with as part of consultation process.

What happens next?

The County Council will review the responses and if necessary (i.e. if objections are received) prepare a report to be presented to the Cabinet Member for Highway Management at a meeting scheduled for later in 2022. This will be public meeting at which members of the public may apply to speak. The agenda and reports for meetings will be made available on the Oxfordshire County Council web site about a week before the meeting (please note that occasionally it is necessary to defer reports to a later meeting, and it is therefore advisable to check the agenda ahead of attending a meeting). The Forward Plan of decisions meetings can be viewed here.
